I've been into photography most of my life.
My father gave me my first camera when I was very young. It was an inexpensive 110
camera that I used on vacation. In high school, I took a photography class and worked on
my school news paper. I spent countless hours in the darkroom and missed a lot of study
hall to take photographs. Much of college life was spent the same way.
It wasn't long after this that I knew this was what I wanted to do for a living.
I've found inspiration in artists of all sorts and from the many photographers I've studied
under and taught with over the years. Every time I see something new, I want pull it in to
my photographic arsenal.
After operating a studio in downtown Duluth MN for over 12 years, we moved to a
spacious home studio in 2011. At the old studio, we featured cool urban senior portraits.
The new studio is located on two acres on a river, so we do a lot of portraits featuring the
natural elements, although we still love visiting some our favorite, old locations. At both
locations, quality outdoor lighting has been important.
I love photography. It's in my blood and always will be. I also love people. What a
beautiful thing it is that I get to spend my days photographing people.

Many as a lighting guru recognize Don Chick! He’s taught studio lighting to hundred’s of photographers across the U.S. and the Bahamas! While he has many awards for his work, the images speak for themselves. Let him show you through his “easy to understand” teaching just how easy it can be to create beautiful portraits. Don has a free email newsletter “Light Readings that you can receive by going to www.DonChick.com and signing up on the opening page.
One key factor to the success of this low-key image is Gerald’s clothing; notice that he’s wearing dark solids. Because his clothing is dark the emphasis goes to his face and hands with the clothing and background visually subordinate. Notice too the strong composition. There is an implied triangle between his hands as well as a leading line up his right arm (image left) bringing you right to his face. Finally the image was enhanced in Photoshop by converting it to b&w, boosting the contrast, adding some selective blur, a vignette and the border.
Creating this portrait of Gerald required my signature 5 light setup. I love the light quality from the Larson 4x6 soft box; therefore it is my light modifier of choice for my Main Light. I prefer using a 42x72 reflector for my Fill light. This is simply to control highlight to shadow contrast. Bring it in close to the subject if you prefer less contrast. Because the 4x6 is so big there’s “extra” light to bounce back onto the subject when using a metallic fabric on the Accent reflector. For this image I used a 40° grid in a 7” parabolic on the Background light. I had a set of barn doors
On the parabolic too, but it isn’t necessary to combine them with the grid. I always use a soft strip for my Hair light. The soft strip and louver combination spreads the light beautifully across the subject area. This helps add separation between the subject and
Background. And the louvers

I am super excited to share with photographers my thought process. Let me show you what I am doing, have you try it so that you can go home and implement it when you get home. I firmly believe that is how creative people learn.

Kevin’s career in photography got it’s big break when his baseball career abruptly ended due to illness and fatigue. Seems the scouts were sick and tired of looking at him. So...after little league, he turned his attention to the arts. While in 8th grade he photographed a shotgun wedding for a foolish bride. Everything that could go wrong, did, but he still walked away with 30 bucks. Harrington Photography was unofficially born.
During High School he honed his skills shooting for the yearbook and any foxy-chicks he could talk into a photo-shoot. After school he got a job at a camera store with a small lab in the basement and took college courses in art, psychology, and business. Then at 19 he wrote up a business plan, hocked his 1977 Olds Cutlass Supreme, and talked the local pro into selling him his shop.
In 1986 Kevin and his wife, Cathy, opened up for real. Since then they have photographed thousands of seniors....and they still love it! Why do high school seniors drive through several towns, past god knows how many faux-tographers, then past 3 other legit studios right in their own town to get to them? Why do most of the kids who don’t come to us wish they had? Catch Kevin’s program and find out why.
SHOOT LIKE A SPIDER MONKEY - MARKET LIKE A GORILLA
MAKE TIME FOR YOUR FAMILY
It’s the most exciting time to be a photographer, and possibly the most challenging time to run a studio. During Harrington’s program we will talk about the balance required to do both exceedingly well, without compromising your family life. All aspects of our senior business will be covered. Studio lighting, outdoor lighting, posing, set design, and shooting psychology will be covered. Shooting for purpose and products. Having fun and making great images IS GONNA happen. How we’ve branded ourselves, how we market to seniors and their families, and last but certainly not least...sales.

I am Kevin Jordan from St. Pauls, NC (population 2500). My wife Dixie and I are honored to be your Spotlight Studio for May. We look forward to sharing and learning with you on this great forum.
I am a third generation photographer that was discouraged from going into photography as a profession by my father due to some of the same concerns I am hearing now from professionals. He wanted the best for me and honestly did not think photography would be a good way to live comfortably and support a family. Here are some of the reasons he gave me to do something else for a living: the hours are long, you will be away from your family on weekends, and technology is making it easier for beginners which will close the gap between professionals and amateurs and create more competition. When I presented ideas of what I had heard other photographers around the country doing he gave me the one liner I still here everywhere I go “you cannot do that here”. I love my dad and he meant the best for me. I do not regret the path I have taken to get to where I am. I completed college with a Computer Science degree at a time when Photoshop was being developed and digital cameras were being developed. My other attempts at careers were also invaluable to give me an understanding of real world business.
I started for the same reason many parents start today. I am a dad with a camera. After my second baby girl was born I did not want to leave for work every day and miss out on them to come home exhausted from work every day. I wanted my own schedule and want to work for myself. I was willing to start over and give up a pay check to be with my family. With the help of my unbelievable supportive wife I gave into my passion and we began our journey as portrait artist. I gave up my great paying job as a network designer and sales consultant to start chasing a dream.
We started our studio over 10 years ago by going door to door with day cares, ball teams, dances, family reunions, weddings and anything that would pay money in exchange for images to allow us to get started in this great profession. We knew this was not where we wanted to go but it was great place to get started and we did not take it for granted. It was hard work and we did it with a smile on our face. Dixie continued teaching elementary school for the first year.
We opened a studio in our small town. With no other models and a lack of education in the “business” of photography, we did what we had seen done before and became an A,B,C,D package style studio that let our proofs disappear into the sunset and hope they would return some day with an order.
We worked hard and so we were surprised to find that 3 years into our business we faced bankruptcy. It was not from a lack of clients but from a lack of profit. It felt like quick sand as it seemed the harder we tried the deeper in debt we got. We did not make a mortgage payment for 6 months and had to call and tell the bank to come get our car.
We decided that we would not give up and attacked the education circuit with the attitude that if it can be done we can do it. We just needed to who was making it and how were they doing it.
Since this decision we have applied the things that we learned. After our first conference we came home and changed our studio completely. We had many fears about it but honestly what did we have to lose. We changed our products, pricing, and vision. We opened a new studio in the same building over night. From that point our studio concentrated in producing high quality portrait art galleries for homes. We became a designer studio specialized in wall decor furniture.
We changed our vocabulary and all our language became focused on furnishing wall spaces with designer art pieces of loved ones. Immediately we began to profit. It was nowhere near perfect when we started and we are still always learning. We focused our attention on the educators in the industry that were accomplishing what we wanted to accomplish. We also looked for people that inspired us in their success, attitude and creativity. We have been to every conference, workshop, seminar, and education event that we could get to for the last 6 years as well as studied forums and it has made all the difference in our business. We always learn something, get inspired or even learn what not to do sometimes. This has been our college and our number one resource for our studio.
Now we are blessed to run a successful studio. We did not give up and did not go into bankruptcy. We paid back all our debt and have money in the bank. We now expect sales of no less than $1000 per client and our single session record to date is $28,000. Our repossessed Tahoe has been replaced with a new Range Rover Sport which was Dixie’s dream car. We have time to spend with our children and love the service we provide for our clients.
With shifts in the economy and consumer buying habits we felt the need to expand. 2 years ago we had the privilege of bringing the amazing talent of Jordan Chan to work with us full time. This allowed us to expand our studio offerings into the world of fashion/editorial styles for the purpose of selling designer art books without taking away from our flagship wall décor offerings.
For us it is privilege to give back to an industry that has given so much to us. We have had the honor of consulting and coaching some of the top studios in the country as well as some that have hit hard times. We look forward sharing the details of how to transition to a high end studio and change your business model from selling photographs to the sales of designer wall art galleries as well as anything else you would like to learn from us.” :: Kevin Jordan,

4’x6’ Soft Box
10”x36” Soft Strip x2
42”x72” Reflectasol Metallic Silver
Free Backplates and Shipping included
Jay Kilgore has been an artist for as long as he can remember. At the ripe old age of 2, Jay’s Mom, an accomplished artist herself, introduced Jay to the wonderful world of art. As Jay grew older, pens, pencils, charcoal, pastels and even dried macaroni and glue became a way for Jay to express himself. Having two hours of Art Class “homework” every night after school, Jay learned from a very early age how to “See light”. At the age of five Jay was given his first assignment; capture memories of a party at his folks house. From that moment on, Jay was hooked on photography. Shooting for himself mostly, Jay amassed well over 30,000 street photography photos.
In 1999 Jay and his diverse family went into a local big chain portrait studio to get photos done. It was apparent the photographers didn’t know how to “properly” light Jay’s family thus the idea to shoot their family portraits came from his wife. Struggling with the idea of sharing his photography, Jay gave it a whirl and found his subjects to be more difficult than he assumed it would be. Soon, After years of shooting family portraits for friends, family and neighbors, Jay caught the Glamour bug.
Shooting Glamour and Boudoir, Jay is a heavily published and sought after photographer and educator! With over 30 images in 22 nationally distributed magazines across the U.S., Jay is known to have a high level of quality when it comes to his work. When it comes to photography, Jay is of the opinion “You only get one chance to get that shot. Make the most of it!” Which is why he uses Larson Ent modifiers! “A photographer is only as good as his or her last image, we need to make sure we’re using the best resources available to us and Larson is the best!”
Today, Jay is a successful Fashion, Glamour and Boudoir photographer and educator residing in Denver, CO. Jay started teaching his style of photography in 2004 and to date has taught well over 3,500 students from across the world!

"Playfully Sexy"
w/ Robert Akers cpp
Playfully Sexy is all about the art of allowing women to show their sexy side in a way that inspires men to look twice! From the Blonde Bombshells of WWII to Farrah Fawcett in the 70's, to Marisa Miller in 2012, Pin-up girls have been around for a longtime. Originally these girls were the inspiration for men to fight hard in the war and come home safely to the girls of their dreams. Their images were ripped out of magazines and pinned on the walls, in lockers and put on calendars.
Today Robert Akers creates these images for women to excite their men and allow them to feel like they are the most beautiful girls in the world. With simple lighting and a little photoshop each woman is transformed from a mortal beauty to an immortal symbol of sexy.
Themes for Pinups are all around us. They are the way we dress and the things we do. "Rosie the Riveter" was one of the first, a girl who was strong and doing a man's job to support the war effort. But, most were in out fits that were slightly revealing. They had a little leg here, some long hair there, and hinted that there was more to come. They wear military uniforms, kitchen aprons, School outfits, lingerie, athletic uniforms and just about anything you can imagine.
So sit back and let Robert Akers introduce you to his world of Pin-Up Photography. He will be discussing all of the important details that will allow you to create your own Pin-Up Dream Girls. Things like make up, costumes, posing, props, lighting and a few photoshop techniques that will complete the transformation. And the whole time he will keep it "Playfully Sexy"
What People think of
"Playfully Sexy with Robert Akers"
"Bob Akers take on Pin-Up Photography is extraordinary. His interaction with his subjects, his approach to quality lighting for greater impact and then his end product. Something you can be proud to show your mother and your friends. If you're a portrait photographer with a little Photoshop knowledge, Bob can show you how to approach an untapped market."
Rene Genest, M.Photog.,Cr
NEIPP Program Director
"Bob Akers has a great energy and a contagious enthusiasm when he gives his program [about Pinups]. He has a genuine knack for connecting with models even in a distracting setting and able to still connect and teach while being engaged in a demonstration with models.
I would recommend him as a speaker, bringing a fun [wholesome] entertaining and valuable presentation of a topic that is popular, but could be awkward if the delivery was not great. His approach and motivation was refreshing and definitely inspirational."
Suzzette Allen, Photog.,CPP, API
National Speaker on Photoshop
Bob is an excellent speaker who not only knows his craft but also does a good job of conveying his message. He speaks to his audience in a warm, friendly and approachable manner that allows him to keep his listeners fully engaged.
It can be difficult at times for photographers to keep raport with their models and still be able to explain to the students what he is thinking and do. Bob does a great job of making sure that everyone is still following him as he is photographing - skills of any great teacher.
Stephanie Platt Zettl
Author of "Nikon Speed light Handbook"
and St Louis Wedding photographer
"Robert has a way of easily describing and performing wonderful posing techniques for Pin up. That is the first thing that I noticed. His easy going style would put any client at ease and that came through as he taught. He is upbeat and extremely positive. That energy is contagious as he details his lighting and the reasons why he poses a certain way.
I love when teachers are entertaining while not holding anything back. He is of the rare bread that is able to easily and effectively communicate his Pin up methods so any student could benefit from a Robert Akers program."
Chuck Arlund
Fashion Photographer, Kansas City
You are an excellent Photographer and an amazing retoucher. I think your personality is warm and generous. Students will love hearing how to do this process.

Bio - Creating a business in a struggling economy is what intrigues most photographers to listen to this inspiring team. When others are struggling, Scott & Adina continue to expand, grow and push the boundaries of business & photographic techniques. With 2008 being their first year in business Scott & Adina turned their focus to photography where Adina used her business & networking skills along with Scottʼs photography to create Hayne Photographers. Weddings became the staple of the business and soon the calendar was full as his style soon became recognized. 2009 brought in more weddings along with an ever expanding portrait arm that included families, corporate and graduates. Soon other photographers and organizations were finding his images
fresh and intriguing. Scott & Adina began to teach workshops and speak at the national
conventions (PPA, WPPI & SYNC) to standing room only venues where photographers were anxious to learn from this dynamic team. From Anchorage to Aruba the workshops and seminars brought them in touch with many fellow photographers. 2009 was an Award winning year with Scott receiving the coveted “Senior Portrait Artist of the Year” along with (for the first time ever) “Top new Artist of the Year”. His prints were receiving many merits on the national level where he has been awarded the “Photographic Craftsman” designation by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). In 2010 Scott & Adina opened up a new full-service commercial studio in
downtown Norfolk. The studio is allowing them to concentrate on their award-winning portraits as well as diversifying their portfolio into fashion and music photography. Now in demand all over the world they are photographing international destination weddings while also speaking across the nation regularly to veteran and new photographers alike.
Influences - Coming from no formal education in photography has allowed Scott to develop his own unique style of wide-angle panoramics and off-camera, bold lighting. This style is a mix of his roots in landscape & nature photography and embracing the latest technology. Scottʼs studio work continues to evolve through experimentation which can be attributed to having little or no parameters which fosters evolutionary leaps in learning. This style and learning technique is a cornerstone to his photography and their teaching. His influences include an eclectic mix of photographers from Ansel Adams to Steven Meisel, Melvin Sokolsky to Joey Lawrence. Workshops & Seminars - Scott & Adina teach on a broad array of subjects that can consume an entire week or be as short as 2 hours. Adina focuses on business and networking strategies. She
delves into the details of pricing, social media, marketing strategies for weddings & seniors along with the intricacies of running a profitable studio. Scott teaches all aspects of his photographic style including off-camera outdoor flash, studio lighting, composition, processing, experimentation and the concept of shooting with “No Rules". This team will leave you inspired and anxious to explore new techniques in your business & photography.

I am a graphic artist who has stumbled into the world of photography and
fallen in love with it. Capturing the human form has always been a passion
of mine. For many years I drew people, everywhere I went I was drawing
everyone around me, studying nuances in the way an arm bent or the how the
curls of someone's hair fell across their nose. I was fascinated how a
single line could completely change the way something looked. This challenge
and love of capturing people slowly lead me to photography. When my first
son was born in 2005 I borrowed my first real camera from a friend and I
began experimenting with it. Slowly I started photographing more friends and
family. Finally in 2007 I had enough of a client base to leave my job as a
graphic artist and become more serious about photography. I worked for a few
years out of an in-home studio. Then in August of last year I opened a new
3600 sq ft retail location. My passion for creating unique images (and a
drastic restructuring of prices) has helped to take my senior average from
$400 to $3400 in just five years. All of the challenges of creating a studio
and drastically increasing prices in a relatively short period of time are
fresh in my memory so please don't hesitate to come hang out with me and
pick my brain.
